Europe: Visual Map on Strike Activity

The European Trade Union Institute has published an interactive map on the average development of days not worked due to industrial action per 1,000 employees in 28 countries of the European Union and its candidate countries, as well as in Norway and Switzerland, in the period between 2001 and 2010.

The map provides a country-by-country overview of the volume of strike activity per country over the last ten years. While indicating that developments in strike volume remain highly volatile, with extraordinary peaks in strike volume followed by year(s) of ‘labour quiescence’, the map also reveals a worrying trend whereby some governments are no longer willing to provide data on strikes.
