The International trade Union Confederation today demanded that the American Chamber of Commerce cease intervening in the domestic politics of other nations.
ITUC general secretary Sharan Burrow today launched a video, based on real transcript, detailing the tactics associated with the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) to de-unionise workplaces .
“AmCham has openly attacked fair labour laws in countries as diverse as Moldova, Romania, Portugal, Spain, Ireland and the slave-state of Qatar.
In China the American Chamber of Commerce openly attacked laws that were delivering labour rights, including collective bargaining.
“Look for a global attack on labour rights and you will find an AmCham in the shadows.
“Their modus operandi is to threaten capital flight from government’s that are considering enacting labour laws that protect workers’ rights including setting a minimum wage.
“Sadly, governments desperate for investment – and party political donations -are only too willing to bend to their will.
It’s time for AmCham to back off and respect the sovereignty of workers to join unions and campaign to shape their future, not to have another nations corporate model imposed on them,” said Sharan Burrow.
The ITUC Global Poll 2014 found nearly two thirds of people think governments should do more to tame corporate power.
